An iconic housing estate near Elephant and Castle, neo-brutalist with high walkways connecting the tall concrete towers surrounded by communal greens and low-rise blocks, the estate was once home to 3,000.
When I visited the Heygate and Aylesbury Estates in 2011, I was struck by the fetishization of the green space. The greens were meant to be seen, not experienced. Once a popular place to live, Heygate fell victim to its lack of community became the target of redevelopment and official neglect by the Southwark Council. The remaining leaseholders have posted about their struggle with the Council.
